DFW SMA Workforce Readiness Partners with EQUIP

Have you felt called to serve those in need but not sure how, who, where or when?  Consider partnering with DFWSMA's Workforce Readiness Committee and utilize your gifts as a Human Resource, Talent Acquisition professional to assist those in transition!  Here are some updates of what your Workforce Readiness Committee has been up to.

In February, I spent an afternoon at SMU's Resumania Career Event to assist students coming up on graduation with resume building.  I was fortunate enough to meet 13 great students graduating in 2010 with Engineering and General Business degrees.  These students were very open to feedback regarding their resumes and soaked in any general job search advice given.  Many of them even took me up on my offer to review their resume again after making revisions based on the feedback.

DFWSMA was recently asked to partner with a Dallas not for profit organization called EQUIP.  What is EQUIP?  EQUIP is an innovative outreach ministry focused on preventing family homelessness and promoting accountability and self sufficiency through community-based mentoring.  EQUIP Mentors work with families who are at risk for situational homelessness due to sudden or severe events such as divorce, illness, death, or overwhelming reduction in household income that result in both financial and psychological burdens, but can be overcome with a few months of assistance and a re-stabilizing curriculum.  Employment coaches are needed to meet once a week with unemployed parents and establish job search tasks, goals, and strategies.  In addition, I am working to set up workshops in hopes of assisting unemployed parents build an effective resume, improve interviewing skills and overall enhance their effectives in the job search.

If you have a passion for helping others and want to offer your gifts in any of these areas, please contact me today!

DFW SMA a Proud Sponsor of Family Gateway

Family Gateway evolved from a 1985 mayoral task force that studied Dallas' growing problem of family homelessness and now provides comprehensive services to children and families who are in crisis. The program offers training and counseling that is intended to restore dignity, stability and self-sufficiency to the family unit. All program and environments are designed to create an atmosphere of emotional, social, and economic empowerment.

Family Gateway Center, with the cooperation of the religious community, private sector and government agencies, opened its doors in 1986 with the ability to serve 30 families (approximately 100 adults and children).

Gateway Apartments, renovated in 1990, provides 25 units of transitional housing where children and their families can reside for up to one year.

Gateway to Jobs began job readiness classes and job search assistance in 1994.

Community Transition Services was launched by Family Gateway in 1995 for those who had completed the residential and job search programs.

Family Treasures Resale Shop was opened in 1998 to provide a venue for our Customer Service Training Program.
